DALLAS (CBSDFW.COM) – The Dallas Police Department held its annual memorial service for fallen officers Wednesday. The department honored fallen Dallas Police Officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
Dallas Police Association President Ron Pinkston explained that in the history of DPD 80 officers have lost their lives. Pinkston said being a part of the ceremony is truly an honor, but that it’s always difficult to read out names of the fallen.
“The officers go out everyday knowing that risk is out there and they’re put in harms way everyday. They are there to serve the citizens of Dallas and make sure they’re safe.”
In addition to the roll call of fallen Dallas officers, Police Chief David Brown and Mayor Mike Rawlings gave speeches.
Pinkston said the service is always a good chance for the public to pay their respects and to give families of civil servants some closure. “Allowing these families to get together and to heal and hear each others stories, we’ve started that at the police association… trying to bring the families together. Keep them in the family of ‘blue.’”
The march downtown that usually opens the ceremony was moved inside the Dallas Convention Center because of rain. The event is usually held outside at the Dallas Police Memorial site on Akard Street.
